Our heart

Jennifer Palilonis Graphic's Assignment

Reflection of 4th of July Story

4th of July celebration has over. The euphoria left a memorable moment in my mind, especially the fireworks party in Minnetrista Cultural Center, Muncie, Indiana.

I was doing my assignment while enjoyed the celebration as part of Study of US Institute for New Media and Journalism activity. I took some interviews with people there. Most of them were Muncie society but some other came from the other place. They were very nice. I enjoyed the conversation although in my broken English. I met very kind people that want to answer my questions beside they wanted to know what I was doing since I looked very different; wore hijab and carried many stuffs such as camera, recorder, microphone, cable, and etcetera.

Firstly, I met Fred Myrick (51), from Muncie. Secondly, I met Amber Widener and her son Aidan Widener (7). They were from Pendleton. They answered my questions clearly. I got what I want from them: thinking and experience. However, I still have to learn more on how to get interact with other people in crowded condition. Formerly, it's very hard for me to start the conversation since it was first time for me to directly make an interview in English. But later they began to understand my condition after I explain to them what I was going to do.

I was very grateful that I met very cooperative interviewees. I was scared before that will not be able to do interview well. But the fact was I can run the assignment smoothly.

I learned a lot from this experience. I learn on how to communicate with people we don't know, and how to make ourselves to be brave in starting new experience. I also learned that preparation is very important in doing something. I believe that this experience and what I learned from it can be valuable for everything I do in the future.

Rain Didn't Stop People to Come to Minnetrista

4th of July Fireworks at Minnetrista Cultural Centetr

MUNCIE, Indiana--Hundreds of people came to Minnetrista on July, 4th 2013 to celebrate America Independence Day watching fireworks decorated the night sky of Muncie. Rain before the celebration didn't stop them to come there with their family.

This summer was a bit different. "Last year was much hotter than this year. This year is rain almost everyday" said Amber Widener, one of people that come to Minnetrista.

Actually Widener was not originally from Muncie. She, with her son Aidan Widener, was from Pendleton. They came to Minnetrista just for seeing the fireworks blew up celebrating the Independence Day.

"I heard that fireworks here is great so that we wanna see that," said Widener. She told that she always move to see different fireworks from different places every year. She wanted her son to feel fireworks show from different places. Aidan also very enjoyed waiting for the show.

Independence day is very important for every country, so is for United States. People celebrate it by various way. This fireworks show was one of the ways to celebrate 4th of July.

Fred Myrick, one of Fireworks show visitor, saw the independence day celebration as a time when family could gather together spending their time which couldn't be done in another days.

"In independence country we get our own constitution, we are free to make decision as a nation and as a small community as well. And we can contribute by our own way for communities for America. For me, its an honor to serve people who died for this country and (gave) their live. It is time for commemorate," said Myrick.

In this celebration, Amber, as well as Aidan, who still in elementary school hope for the better of America. Their hope probably is the same hope as millions of other US citizens wherever they are. People who lived in this country loved this country very much. They wanna see improvement towards better America in the future.

My preparation for 4th July story

I already finish my first week in Muncie for SUSI Program. It was nice to see everything here, the places, the weathers, the classes, the lecturers, and the assignment. Everything is great and makes me think how if it is happen in my country.

On Thursday, 4th of July, all the SUSI grantees are going to celebrate America Independence Day. The celebration is going to take place in Minnetrista, Muncie. There will be a fireworks and people for all over Muncie will gather there enjoying the fireworks decorate the night sky of Muncie.

It will be a great event especially for American citizen since they will celebrate their independence, their freedom, and their new life. I am going to record their celebration experiences from year to year and what value that they get from the celebration. I believe that people have their own perspective about independence: what does it mean to them, what do they perceive the government today, what are their hopes for better America, and what have they done to fill the independence.

I read a lot about America Independence day so that I can have a bit more knowledge about American history. It will become my foundation to get some more information from Muncie society. I hope so.

Community Service Activity

MUNCIE--Thursday (27/6) eight students from Indonesia and Malaysia visited Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana. They were participants of Study of US Institute for New Media and Journalism, a program sponsored by The Department of State. This visit was one of their community service activities during their program here in the US.

The students amazed by the system of the foundation which established since 1983 because the foods stored in the warehouse were in very good condition and nothing wrong with them. The foods came mostly from department stores and food industries which have overwhelming storage or foods that no longer can be sold because of several reasons. They sent the foods to the warehouse to be redelivered to people who need them.

"They even still good and excellent," as Zacky, one of students from Indonesia said.

This institute has served 20 thousand pounds of food last year. this was done as an implication of the fact that in 2011, 46.2 million people were in poverty in America (feedingamerica.org) and 16 million of them are kids (www.nokidhungry.org). Second Harvest Food Bank provides food for unfortunate people who do not have food in Indiana, and sometimes another state as well. 80% of them were delivered to the agencies and the rest were taken by agencies to the warehouse by themselves.

There are several programs doing by Second Harvest Food Bank, such as Tailgate Program, The Commodity Supplemental Food Program, Emergency Shelter, Child Hunger Program, Emergency Soup Kitchen, and Emergency Food Pantries. For this 30 years Second Harvest Food Bank has struggled to keep provide foods for entire Indiana especially for Muncie.
